It’s that time of year again…time for A Taste of Opera!  Join Dr. Nicolas Reveles, our Geisel Director of Education and Outreach, for creatively-themed pairings of delectable cuisine and exciting opera discussions at some of San Diego’s hottest restaurants. Additionally, he will join Chef Katherine Emmenegger, CCC at Great News! Cooking School for tantalizing cooking classes with an opera theme.

Join Nicolas Reveles and Jeff Nevin, Director of Mariachi Champaña Nevin and Professor of Mariachi Studies at Southwestern College as they search out the origins of mariachi, the significance of Cruzar as the first opera written in that style and listen to some excerpts from the opera itself. The Daughter of the Regiment by Gaetano Donizetti, is an exciting, sparkling and hilarious opera which tells of an orphan French girl adopted by a regiment of soldiers in the waning days of World War II. The independent, spunky tomboy Marie loves Tonio, a peasant, but the Marquise tries to marry her off to a rich Duke. Nick Reveles Rich Black Love our new 2013 season artwork? Then come meet Rich Black, the artist that brought it to life! A special evening is in store for all at the University Club as Dr. Reveles, The Geisel Director of Education, introduces us to artist Rich Black, whose latest works for our 2013 season are taking San Diego by storm. We’ll focus on his creative process and exactly what it is he must do in order to communicate the stories and the emotions of these works that we love so much. A limited amount of posters will be available for purchase, signed by the artist. At the end of the dinner, Dr. Nick will briefly explore the musical delights of The Daughter of the Regiment and how comedy can be communicated through music.
