American soprano Ellie Dehn replaces Anja Harteros as Mimì in La bohème.

San Diego, CA –San Diego Opera’s General Director and Artistic Director, Ian Campbell, announced today that German soprano Anja Harteros has withdrawn from her engagement as Mimì in San Diego Opera’s La bohème on private and personal reasons.

“Anja is a dear friend of this Company, and apologizes to our patrons for her inability to appear” Campbell said, “we wish her all the best and look forward to her return to us in 2011 for her role debut as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier.”

The role of Mimì will now be sung by the exciting young American soprano Ellie Dehn. Still under 30 years of age, Ellie Dehn’s career is already taking her to La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, and the opera companies in Geneva, Bologna, Los Angeles and San Francisco, among others.

“When I first heard her in an audition more than two years ago it was apparent that Ellie was going to have an important career”, Campbell said. “I offered her an engagement immediately which she could not accept due to a clash of dates. I am so glad that she is able to join us now.”

Puccini’s La bohème opens January 30, 2010 for four performances and marks the Company debuts of tenor Piotr Beczala as Rodolfo, and Ellie Dehn as Mimì. “With Ellie and Piotr we are guaranteed an evening of incredible singing from an exciting young cast.” Campbell said.
