PODCAST
Putting The Barber of Seville in ContextContinuing with our series (placing our 4 operas in historical and cultural context), here is a look at The Barber of Seville and its roots in the Italian commedia dell'arte tradition. Now that sounds pretty esoteric, right? But no, it has a lot to do with the plot and characters in the Rossini opera and, when you come to think about it, has a lot to do with what passes as nightly entertainment on our multitudinous television networks! (Think situation comedies!) Nicolas Reveles explains it all to you! Enjoy. |
Using Your Ears at the Opera: Rosina in The Barber of SevilleComposers like Rossini wrote their operas for specific singers, often waiting until actual rehearsals to finish the music so that the arias and ensembles could be tailored to that singer's particular gifts. Such was the case for Rosina, the heroine in The Barber of Seville. Listen to Nicolas Reveles, The Geisel Director of Education and Outreach for San Diego Opera talk about how important it is to match the personality of the VOICE with the personality of the CHARACTER in opera. |
The Perfect 'Opera buffa', The Barber of Seville
Last week this podcast reviewed some of the commedia roots of Donizetti's Don Pasquale. This week Education Director Nicolas Reveles does the same thing for Rossini's Barber of Seville, the quintessential opera buffa or comic opera. Enjoy!

THE BARBER OF SEVILLE
Figaro, Figaro, Fiiiiiiigaro!!
He’s Seville’s “King of Lather and Foam”…and master of a few other tricks as well! Barber by day, matchmaker by night, Figaro puts his wiles to work as he aids the Count in wooing the beautiful Rosina. She’s such a catch that her sleazy guardian keeps her under lock and key with the intent of marrying her himself. But no challenge is too great for Figaro’s trickery. And, with laughter at every turn, the cunning Rosina is no slouch at manipulating things herself! This riotous musical comedy is one of the most popular in the operatic repertoire.
With whimsical designs based on the style of Belgian surrealist artist Magritte, you’ll see fluffy clouds, flying chairs, a barber pole and, of course, even raining bowler hats. It’s a visual and musical feast featuring Lucas Meachem as the conniving Figaro, Silvia Tro Santafé as the delectable Rosina, conductor Antonello Allemandi finding every note of Rossini’s happy score and Herbert Kellner directing this hilarious production.
The running time is approximately 3 hours and 6 minutes including one intermission.
