The renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, known as the World’s Best Mariachi and heard on more than 800 recordings, take the stage for the first mariachi opera, a bi-lingual work following three generations of a single family, spanning countries, cultures and customs. Performed to ecstatic reviews in Houston and Paris, this semi-staged production receives its West Coast premiere. “A multicultural winner”, “a stunning, emotional Mariachi opera”, “the bright Mariachi orchestration (violins, trumpets, harp and guitars) and endless variation of song forms are irresistible” say the media.
Mark, a Mexican-American dealing with the approaching death of his immigrant father, faces questions about his own place in the world - straddling two cultures - as well as that of his father and his American daughter. As long-buried secrets are revealed, he finds himself dramatically re-evaluating his own understanding of what makes a family. Like the Monarch butterflies which migrate every year to the birthplace of Mark’s father, the members of the Velasquez family must travel both physically and spiritually between Michoacán and Texas and look deep into their hearts before they learn where they truly belong.

Una presentación bilingüe que recorre la historia de una familia a lo largo de tres generaciones abarcando distintas culturas, costumbres y países. Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán
The origins of Mariachi music go back to 1630. But, without a doubt, Mariachi Vargas is the most representative of the entire history of mariachi,
because it was the group that has consistently and decisively influenced and shaped the musical style of mariachi, who has traveled the world with its music
and has had many hits. The group refined the rugged aspect of the music of that region of southern Jalisco (Gaspar Vargas), together with the finely and
cultured of legal music of the regional elite (Ruben Fuentes), mediated by a born musician campirano who sought transcendence in the world of mass media
(Silvestre Vargas).
It all started in the Jalisco town of Tecalitlan with a musical grouop begun by Gaspar Vargas López (1881-1969), took various musical and literary elements of the so-called “tradition of southern Jalisco mariachera” or the Camino Real de Colima and surrounding areas, which is shared by populations of states of Colima and Michoacan.
Throughout its history, the Mariachi Vargas has evolved in such a way that historians have divided their evolution in stages (or generations) that have been marked by characteristics that distinguish one from another.
Los orígenes de la música de mariachi se remontan a 1630. Pero, sin duda, el Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, es el más representativo de toda la historia del mariachi, porque ha sido el grupo que ha influido de manera más constante y decisiva en la conformación del estilo musical del mariachi, es quién más éxitos musicales ha tenido y es quien más ha recorrido el mundo con su música. Esta agrupación depuró el aspecto agreste de la música de esa comarca de la región sur de Jalisco (Gaspar Vargas), junto con la manera fina y culta de la música letrada de la élite regional (Rubén Fuentes), mediados por un músico de origen campirano que buscó la trascendencia en el mundo de los medios de comunicación masiva (Silvestre Vargas).
Todo comenzó en el pueblo jalisciense de Tecalitlán (Foto 01) con una agrupación musical iniciada por Gaspar Vargas López (1880-1969), tomaba distintos elementos musicales y literarios de la denominada “tradición mariachera del sur de Jalisco” o del Camino Real de Colima y áreas circunvecinas, la cual es compartida por poblaciones de los estados de Colima y Michoacán.
A lo largo de su historia, el Mariachi Vargas ha ido evolucionando de tal forma que los historiadores han dividido su evolución en etapas (o generaciones) que han sido marcadas por características que distinguen una de otra.
