SALOME

Decadent, sensuous and deadly ...

Salome’s disturbing obsession with John the Baptist drives her to make a shocking request: the head of the Prophet as a reward for performing the sensuous Dance of the Seven Veils. Based on Oscar Wilde’s dramatic adaptation of the biblical story of Salome and her lecherous stepfather, the dysfunctional and dangerous court of King Herod is brought to searing life through Richard Strauss’ seductive music. This chillingly erotic story still has the power to shock audiences more than 100 years after its premiere.

Every role makes extraordinary vocal and dramatic demands on the artists, and our remarkable cast will be riveting. Salome, lost in her own world of wantonness and sensuality, will be sung by last season’s brilliant Turandot, Lise Lindstrom, with Greer Grimsley as the noble John the Baptist. Allan Glassman and debut artist, soprano Irina Mishura, round out the cast in this stunning opener to our 2012 International Season!

The running time is approximately 1 hour and 48 minutes with no intermission.

In a role that is often more 'spoken' than sung, Glassman makes a very good point of actually singing the role and stressing its lyrical potential. Enjoy this interivew with Geisel Director of Education and Outreach, Nicolas Reveles.

Putting SALOME in Context

Beginning this week, we'll put all four of our opera productions for 2012 in context of both the eras in which they were originally produced as well as in context of the time and place of their stories. Salome, for instance, is set in first-century Galilee, but the opera has much more to say about the time during which it was written, at the turn of the 20th century. Nicolas Reveles, the Geisel Director of Education and Outreach for San Diego Opera, explains it all to you!
